Neptune Square: Midlife Transits

Depending on the timing of Pluto’s orbit, the Neptune square can come either before or after the Pluto Square.  Either way, this transit can be disorienting. You can suddenly be swept up into an idealized fantasy that knocks you off your feet or you might just start to feel lost, disillusioned by life and what you thought it might look like by now. Maybe your family responsibilities are starting to wear you down or you’ve suddenly reached a glass ceiling at your job.

During your Neptune square you start to feel a nostalgic longing for something you cannot describe. Is this it? Is this what my life is going to be like for the rest of my years? During this transit period, Neptune veils. You cannot see clearly. Be careful about mirages, because there will be a few. This transit may be the set up for you to do something completely out of character when your Uranus Opposition hits a couple of years later. Cougar anyone? 😀

Neptune squares can also cause melancholy or depression which can make you seek out unhealthy escapes. It’s often a great time to shift your focus into creative or spiritual activities where you can channel this period productively. Listen to your soul’s desire and feed it what it needs, which is connection to the creator spirit. Ease up on yourself if your responsibilities have become unbearably stifling. Take a sabbatical if you can even if it’s just for a weekend here or there. Ask for reinforcements if you need it.

“Depression, loss of meaning, physical illness, and even psychotic breakdown may imply not a deep underlying pathology but a creative force which is seeking to break down outworn life patterns and attitudes. Thus what was previously experienced as normality may, through rigidity and overidentification, have become life destroying; and what is diagnosed as illness may in fact be the unprepossessing surface of a secret healing process. Many problems which, in a psychoanalytic framework, could be attributed to the lingering and still suppurating wounds of childhood may, viewed from this perspective, be the outward signs of a profound spiritual crisis which must be recognized and validated for what it is, if life is to move forward creatively.” - Liz Green, The Astrological Neptune and the Quest for Redemption

The point of a Neptune Square is to connect you back to your creative spirit.  The more you resist it, the more likely you will suffer depression or physical illness. When we don’t listen to our inner voice, when we deny ourselves what we need or try to fill our void with unhealthy escape mechanisms, we will simply suffer the consequences. So listen now or pay later. It’s your choice.

Speaking as a Neptune in the Sagittarius generational cohort, we especially need that spiritual communion and some of us have sought out that connection through drugs and alcohol. Especially as Neptune has traveled through Pisces. But you’ll never find true spiritual connection through drugs and alcohol. It is empty and can eventually turn on you to take the very spirit you seek. Neptune is also saying goodbye to Pisces soon and I for one and looking forward to this move, but not looking forward to the warrior energy it brings with it. As it enters Aries, it will start to square the Neptune-in-Capricorn generation. Drop me a comment and tell me your Neptune stories.
